Several hip hop artists have successfully blended their sound with classical orchestras for live performances and recordings. Notable examples include Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Cypress Hill, and the group Thee Phantom & the Illharmonic Orchestra.
Key Artists and Collaborations
AKA and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra historically collaborated for the AKA Orchestra on the Square Shows, marking him as the first hip-hop artist in South Africa to perform with a full orchestra and notably blending genres.

Nas: Performed his seminal album Illmatic live with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, creating a widely acclaimed fusion of hip hop and classical music.

Jay-Z: Performed at Carnegie Hall with The Roots and members of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, reimagining his hits with live string and brass arrangements.

Kanye West: Released the 2006 live album Late Orchestration, which featured him performing his songs alongside a 17-piece, all-female string orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. He sought to dispel snobbery towards hip hop as an art form by showcasing its potential for orchestral interpretation.

Rick Ross: Collaborated with the all-Black symphony, Orchestra Noir, for the American debut of the Red Bull Symphonic series in Atlanta. They performed orchestral renditions of his hits, including "Hustlin'" and "Aston Martin Music".

Common: Joined the San Francisco Symphony and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on separate occasions to perform his music in concert, drawing in diverse audiences.

Thee Phantom & the Illharmonic Orchestra: This group specifically focuses on the fusion of hip hop and classical music, with the founder being the first hip hop artist to perform at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

These collaborations bridge the gap between two distinct musical traditions, demonstrating hip hop's artistic depth and attracting new, diverse audiences to orchestral venues.
